Help launch Oregons five point crab initiative
When you order, you help us build this effort, and it is delicious!
Your purchase supports the launch of Oregon's European 5-Point Crab Initiative and helps grow a new local seafood economy built around the responsible harvest and commercialization of the European 5-point crab.
This effort is part of a larger initiative to commercialize the species as a sustainable seafood resource while helping restore the South Slough estuary.
By participating, you become part of the South Slough Management Solution—transforming an invasive species into local food, coastal jobs, healthier estuaries, and a more resilient working waterfront.
The Oregon European 5-Point Crab Initiative is a community-driven effort to transform an environmental challenge into an opportunity for Oregon's coastal communities.
The European 5-point crab (Carcinus maenas) is an invasive species that has become established in Oregon's estuaries. While native to Europe, it competes with native species and poses risks to shellfish habitats and the long-term health of estuarine ecosystems. Scientists, resource managers, and commercial fishermen have spent years studying ways to manage its population. We believe one of the most effective long-term solutions is to create a sustainable market that encourages responsible harvest.
Our initiative brings together fishermen, seafood processors, chefs, researchers, educators, oyster growers, conservation organizations, and community members to develop new products, new markets, and new economic opportunities centered around the European 5-point crab.
Rather than viewing the crab solely as an invasive species, we see a healthy, nutritious, abundant food source—an opportunity for sustainable seafood. Responsible harvesting supports restoration, creates local jobs, and introduces consumers to a delicious, underutilized seafood resource.
